Fit, Extend or Buy: Architecting Non-Standard Customer Requirements in Business Central
Business Central projects often start with the promise of standard ERP capability, but customer requirements rarely fit neatly into standard process boundaries.
Partners are regularly asked to support scenarios such as rental services, asset maintenance, subscription billing, multi-entity operations, non-standard approvals, specialised banking, procurement integrations, or workflows that cross finance, inventory, purchasing and service management.
The challenge is not only whether the requirement can be delivered. The harder question is what the right architectural response should be.
Should the customer adapt their process to fit standard Business Central? Can it be met through configuration or process design? Should an ISV solution be introduced? Should the partner build an extension? Should it sit in another platform and integrate back to BC? Could AI, Copilot or agents provide a better path by augmenting users, automating decisions or orchestrating work across systems? Or should it be challenged because it creates more risk than value?
This session provides a decision framework for consultants, architects and leads assessing non-standard requirements. It will cover functional fit, business value, delivery risk, supportability, extensibility, ISV suitability, AI and agent suitability, integration complexity and maintainability.
Attendees will leave with a framework they can apply during discovery, solution design, estimation, scope review and delivery governance.
